Immunotoxicity / skin sensitisation group
Modern society relies on thousands of chemicals found in everyday products, yet for most of them we still know very little about their toxicity, especially their potential effects on the immune system.
Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other materials can disturb immune function, a phenomenon known as immunotoxicity, which can increase susceptibility to disease or trigger harmful overreactions of the immune system.
Our goal is to better understand and predict immunotoxic effects of chemicals, particles, and pharmaceuticals, including the most common immunotoxic outcome of chemical exposure, skin sensitisation. In addition, we investigate related cell‑biological processes using primarily human in vitro models to elucidate the cellular mechanisms driving toxicity.
By strengthening our knowledge of how these substances interact with the immune system, we can better predict adverse effects before products reach the market. This will support the development of safer materials, improve regulatory decision‑making, and ultimately help protect public health.
