Psychological resilience in cancer group

Psychological resilience has significant implications for cancer patients, since highly resilient patients experience a better quality of life, less mental health problems, and a better treatment outcome, referring to the ability to handle trauma in life, such as a cancer diagnosis.

However, the somatic background of psychological resilience is largely unexplored, and we set out to decipher this In a cohort of over 1000 cancer patients, where we for the first time identified epigenetic markers discriminating between high vs low resilience (Richter et al, 2025). 

The identified hypermethylated gene segment codes for the protein LY6G5C with a largely unknown function although it has been indicated in inflammation and oncogenesis. The biological function of LY6G5C is now being investigated using in vitro models as well as #d docking experiments. 

Improve understanding of the role of LY5G5C in regulating psychological resilience could pave the way for clinical applications, where the long-term goal would be to strengthen resilience is patients leading to improved outcome of their disease.
